Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro tested negative for Covid-19 on Sunday, the government said. The number of cases recorded by his delegation on return from the UN General Assembly in New York, however, fell from three to four.
The press release does not specify whether the head of state, placed in solitary confinement on his return from New York on Wednesday, will resume his activities on Monday or will be tested for a second time beforehand.
In the afternoon, Pedro Guimaraes, the president of the public bank Caixa Economica Federal, announced on Instagram that his test was positive, becoming the fourth case of contamination in the Brazilian delegation to the United Nations General Assembly.
Previously, MP Eduardo Bolsonaro, whose father is the Brazilian president, announced on Friday that he had tested positive for Covid-19. Another member of the Brazilian delegation to the UN, the Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, was also infected with the virus. He tested positive in New York and had to stay in quarantine at a hotel in the American metropolis.
“The last” to get vaccinated
The first case was that of a diplomat who arrived in New York a day before the Brazilian head of state.
In addition to the Brazilian president, around fifty people were placed in preventive quarantine after the trip, including members of his entourage and relatives. Unvaccinated against Covid-19, Jair Bolsonaro has been seen several times without a mask during his stay in New York.
Very criticized for his management of the health crisis, the Brazilian president has continued to minimize the seriousness of the virus while having been infected himself. He has repeatedly affirmed that he would be “the last Brazilian” to be administered a vaccine against Covid-19, 222 million doses of which have already been injected to date in his country.
