Bolsonaro gives up organizing barbecue with hundreds of people in official residence – Observer

With the number of deaths by Covid-19 in Brazil close to the 10,000 deaths mark, President Jair Bolsonaro gave up the barbecue he had set for this Saturday at the Palácio da Alvorada, the official residence of the Brazilian head of state. On social networks, the event was quickly known as #churrascodamorte.

Allies of the president cited (anonymously) by Folha de São Paulo indicate that Bolsonaro gave up the party on Friday, May 8, canceling the invitations he had made to ministers and other members of the government. According to Folha, no justification was given for the decision to give up the barbecue.

Following the controversy and protests raised by Bolsonaro’s public invitation to socialize at the Palácio da Alvorada, the president himself decided to say that there was no barbecue, which was a “fake news” invented by the press.

“Some idiotic journalists criticized the FAKE barbecue, but the MLB went above and beyond with ACTION IN JUSTICE,” Bolsonaro wrote on social media. A reference to the lawsuit filed on Friday by the Free Brazil Movement, aimed at preventing the barbecue. In the lawsuit, the MLB appealed to the judge to fine Bolsonaro by R $ 100,000 if the barbecue was held. This value should then be used to fight the new coronavirus.

When he spoke for the first time at the barbecue, Bolsonaro said that around 30 people, his ministerial team, would be invited, something that aroused criticism from deputies and senators, for disrespecting the indications of health authorities. A day later, on Friday, Bolsonaro had already adopted an ironic tone about the barbecue.

The video you put on post it’s about this most ironic moment. Bolsonaro first confirms the existence of an invitation to the barbecue at the Palácio da Alvorada, but then he seems to play with the total number of guests. First he says that the presence of 180 people has already been confirmed, then 210 guests, but then it rises to 300, 500 and – after appeals from the anonymous people he is talking to – he ends up saying: “everyone is invited here”. “There are 1,300 confirmed,” says the Brazilian president, later counting 3,000 people. This while the popular laugh and say “but the [TV] Globo does not enter ”.

Even at the end of the video, Bolsonaro seems to say that he will “hold out” and that “there is no barbecue”, but the next sentence is imperceptible.
