Bochum’s coach Reis suspended – appeal to Stafylidis

VfL Bochum coach Thomas Reis has been suspended for one game for his red card in Freiburg.

The 48-year-old is missing in the Bundesliga game of the promoted team on Sunday (5:30 p.m. / DAZN) against FC Augsburg. The German Football Association announced the decision of the DFB sports court. This would mean that Reis would not be allowed to celebrate inside the stadium because of unsportsmanlike behavior if Bochum were to manage to remain in the league early.

Bochum agreed with the DFB verdict against Reis, but not with that for VfL professional Konstantinos Stafylidis. A three-game suspension has been requested for the midfielder for rough play. Bochum has lodged an objection to this judgment and requested an oral hearing.

Both Reis and Stafylidis were punished with a red card in the league game at SC Freiburg. The protesting coach was sent to the stands by referee Sascha Stegemann on Saturday after Stafylidis was sent off. After the 3-0 defeat in Freiburg, he explained that his anger was not directed at the team of referees, but at Stafylidis.

“I made a windshield wiper, I stand by that,” said Reis. “But in the end I’m disrespectful to my player because I meant my player how he can do something like that.” The VfL coach explained that he noticed that the fourth official had referred the gesture to himself.
