With an update, Apple has the power of Airpods Pro deteriorated. The Bluetooth earplugs offer Active Noise Canceling (ANC) to reduce ambient noise by means of counter noise. With the update to version 2C54, however, the ANC performance of the True Wireless In-Ears has clearly deteriorated. The testers from Rtings have checked and confirmed that the active noise cancellation on the Airpods Pro “Significant” has decreased. Before, users had repeatedly complained that the ANC performance had deteriorated with the update.
Job market
If you already operate the Airpods Pro with firmware 2C54, you can currently only wait until Apple publishes a revised firmware in which this error no longer occurs. Apple does not offer customers the option to switch to older firmware. Everything currently indicates that Apple had already withdrawn firmware 2C54 in early January 2020. The manufacturer has not yet commented on this, so many questions remain unanswered.
So it is not officially confirmed that it has been withdrawn, nor is there a new date for the next firmware update. We have checked with Apple and will add to the article as soon as we have further details.
Apple installs firmware update without asking
Version 2B588 for Airpods Pro was released before firmware 2C54. Even after this firmware update, there were user reports about a weaker ANC performance, but this could not be confirmed by Rtings.
Anyone who uses the Airpods with an Apple product will get new firmware updates installed without asking. There is not even a hint when new firmware is installed. Apple gives users no way to prevent automatic updates. Conversely, it is also not possible to trigger an update process manually.
If you use the Airpods Pro with Android devices, for example, you can bypass automatic firmware updates in this way. Because Apple does not support the Android platform, so that no settings can be made in the configuration of the Airpods Pro and no firmware updates can be installed.
Owners of the Airpods Pro can find the version number on an iPhone in the About area in the Settings. The Airpods Pro popup does not show the version number.
The Airpods Pro tested us liked it very much when we tested it with an older firmware. They deliver great sound, a powerful ANC for this type of device as well as an intelligent solution against step reverb problems. This technique should be included with most earphones and earplugs. Only the control of the Airpods Pro could be more comfortable, we would like to be able to change the volume by pressing a button on the plug. And non-Apple devices should finally be officially supported so that all of the Airpods Pro’s convenience functions can also be used with devices from other manufacturers. The basic functions are available with any Bluetooth-enabled device.
