“Wrong son”: Elderly woman cheated of her savings

Mönchengladbach, Krefeld (ots) –

Due to regional references, we are sharing the following report from the Krefeld police from February 18, 2022 at 10:02 a.m. (Link: https://www.presseportal.de/blaulicht/pm/50667/5150037):

An 84-year-old from Krefeld gave a lot of money to scammers because she thought her son had to be saved from prison with bail. A courier accepted the sum in Mönchengladbach.

The men called her on Thursday morning (February 17, 2022). One of them had initially pretended to be her son in a slurred voice. Then another man took over the conversation and told the elderly woman that her son could not speak properly because he was in shock. He had killed someone in a traffic accident and must now be in custody if no one pays bail for him.

The Krefeld woman then withdrew a five-digit sum from a bank. On the instructions of the scammers, she took a taxi to Mönchengladbach, where a courier took the money. But the perpetrators were not satisfied and guided their victim back to Krefeld. There the woman should withdraw more money from another bank. However, the branch employee became suspicious, refused the payment and informed the elderly woman that she was about to fall victim to fraud. Together they informed the police.

The immediately initiated search was unsuccessful. The courier who took the money in Mönchengladbach around 3:30 p.m. on Pescher Strasse was 20 to 30 years old and 1.80 to 1.85 meters tall. He was wearing a black cap and, according to the elderly woman, had European appearance. Witnesses are asked to contact the Krefeld police on 02151 6340 or by email at [email protected].
