Bloomberg: North Korea announces first case of Covid-19

North Korean leader Kim Jongun has shut down all cities after Covid-19 was first announced.

“A serious situation has arisen as a result of the introduction of the secret omicron mutant virus into our areas,” North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency said. At a party meeting attended by Kim, the authorities raised the country’s national quarantine measures to the maximum.

Kim has ordered “all cities and counties across the country to close their territories carefully” to “completely block the spread of the virus,” the KCNA said.

Until Thursday, the Kim regime had denied Covid cases, which were questioned by experts from the United States, Japan and other countries. It has also refused vaccines from the outside world, saying planned shipments have been suspended because North Korea does not want to comply with the Covax rules, which are being supported by the World Health Organization.

In August 2020, North Korea announced that it was moving forward with the development of a virus vaccine, but has little mention of the vaccine since then. Any outbreak of Covid-19 in North Korea, if widespread, could potentially be devastating due to the country’s outdated health care system and the possible lack of vaccines. A recent United Nations report states that North Korea and Eritrea are the only two countries in the world that have not introduced vaccines.
