Blood Transfusion and Donor Shortages: Impact on Anemia Patients and Red Blood Cell Storage Solutions

[Ming Pao News]Bone marrow is responsible for producing red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. All three types of blood cells are very important and one is indispensable. Red blood cells contain hemoglobin, which is responsible for carrying oxygen to organs and tissues throughout the body; white blood cells fight viral and bacterial infections; platelets are responsible for stopping bleeding.[Editor’s note: What kind of blood cells do patients with anemia or blood loss need? In recent years, the Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Bank has been experiencing frequent blood shortages. Why? Which patients will actually benefit from a blood donation? ]

Anemia is caused by a decrease in red blood cells in the blood

Anemia refers to a decrease in the number of red blood cells and a decrease in hemoglobin concentration in the blood; common causes include bleeding, hemolysis, iron deficiency, and marrow failure. The patient has anemia and the cause must be found. Blood transfusion can only temporarily improve the situation.

Blood products made from different components

The Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service is responsible for coordinating blood transfusion services in Hong Kong and converts the collected blood into different component blood products, including packed cells, fresh frozen Plasma (fresh frozen plasma), cryoprecipitate (cryoprecipitate) and platelet concentrate (platelet concentrate) are supplied to patients in public and private hospitals in Hong Kong.

Patients with blood loss or anemia only need red blood cells. Fresh frozen plasma and cryoprecipitate can improve the patient’s blood coagulation problems (coagulation problems), and platelet transfusion can help increase the patient’s platelet count. Donating blood once can actually benefit many patients.

Blood supply in blood banks is tight. Young women eat less red meat and lose iron in menstrual blood.

In recent years, the Hong Kong Red Cross blood bank has been experiencing frequent blood shortages, and the blood supply is tight, fearing that it will affect the condition of patients. The majority of blood donors are young people, while many recipients of blood transfusions are elderly. As Hong Kong’s population ages and supply and demand are prone to imbalance, more young people must be encouraged to join the ranks of blood donors and donate blood regularly. Many young women eat less red meat or fail to fully replenish the iron lost from menstrual blood. They are prone to anemia and are therefore not suitable for blood donation, further affecting the number of blood donors. During long holidays, a large number of Hong Kong people choose to travel abroad, which makes the blood supply even tighter.

Red blood cells can be stored with glycerol at -80°C for 10 years

Scientists are focusing on artificial blood research, but there is still no major breakthrough. We still need more voluntary blood donations. Red blood cells can be stored at 4°C for 42 days using preservative solutions. If 40% glycerol (glycerol) is added, the red blood cells can be stored at -80°C for 10 years, which is suitable for preserving blood of rare blood types in case of emergency needs.
