Blood plasma treatment approved in US: Trump speaks of breakthrough

Yesterday, on the eve of the Republican convention, US President Donald Trump announced that the administration of convalescent (curative) plasma against corona will be accelerated.

‘Powerful treatment’

The Washington Post had previously announced that the president would have the treatment method approved.

Authorization has been granted by the United States Medicines Authority (FDA). “This is a powerful treatment,” the president told reporters about the treatment. “Today’s action will drastically increase access to this treatment.”

Need blood donors

The US Secretary of Health, Alex Azar, stated that more than 70,000 corona patients have now undergone plasma therapy. Initial research results show that the people who received plasma had a 35 percent higher survival rate.

The White House is therefore calling on people who have had the corona virus to donate blood. According to Trump, “many Americans will benefit from the treatment method,” but enough people must show up blood donors.

Experts believe that the method may help fight the virus, but it is by no means a decisive breakthrough. Trump himself spoke of a “historic breakthrough” that will “save countless lives”.

In the Netherlands too

In the Netherlands, too, there is good hope that blood plasma from ex-corona patients can work as a medicine against the corona virus. Sanquin blood bank has been ordered to collect 30,000 kilos of blood plasma, but before that thousands of ex-corona patients are needed as donors.
