Blood donation: multiply collections to replenish stocks

With Christmas falling on a Friday, blood drives have been halted for 4 days and supplies continue to drop. To fill the gaps, the French Blood Establishment (EFS) is increasing the number of mobile blood drives.

Blood stocks continue to decline in Reunion, especially those of platelets, components of the blood that help coagulation and which cannot be kept for more than 7 days. With the approach of the hurricane season, the EFS is worried about having sufficient stocks in case of bad weather.

This Sunday, December 27, a mobile collection takes place at the Leclerc Portail de Piton Saint-Leu from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is advisable to make an appointment before going there.

Multiplication of mobile collections

To replenish stocks, the French Blood Establishment in Réunion is therefore increasing the number of mobile blood drives. “We need these intermediate collections, explains Dr Idriss Delouane, director of the ESF. They will make it possible to make up for this great weekend.”

He noted a decrease in the frequency of blood donation during school holidays. These mobile operations are essential “to get as close as possible to donors“, explains Dr.

We have only one solution, and that is to have donors to help the sick. “He also recalls that the sick”do not take vacation. “To meet the needs of the department, 120 blood donations are needed every day.

A difficult year to donate blood

This year has been particularly difficult for the EFS due to the health crisis. The institution has had to adapt its health protocol so that barrier measures can be observed when people come to donate blood.

Dr Idriss Delouane nevertheless noted “very important donor mobilization“during the first confinement. However, the people of Reunion donated less blood once the deconfinement arrived. In addition, the EFS could no longer install blood donation centers in companies, due to health restrictions and to university, because there were no more students. In normal times, it is always in these places that there are always “a very large number of donors“, regrets Dr Delouane.
