Within the framework of this work, an international group of researchers attracted volunteers whose brain activity was scanned while blindfolded. Thus, the participants, during the scan, included the singing of birds, dialogues of people and the noise of transport through headphones. It turned out that the participants used the primary visual cortex to determine the sound. The same experiment was carried out with people who were blind from birth, due to which it became known that the primary visual cortex does not need visual images and representations to decipher sounds.
“Through our research, we found that while visually impaired people can use their visual imaginations, those who do not have sight still use the same part of the brain to transmit sound, which means that people have a basic brain mechanism. independent of visual imagery and, more interestingly, visual experience. Thus, the study showed that even the earliest part of the visual cortex is sensitive to the information we hear, not just what we see.”, – said Dr. Petra Vetter from the Department of Psychology Royal Holloway.
