Black Friday vs. corona: a manual

Elise Buntinx

Just because the stores are currently closed doesn’t mean you don’t feel like shopping. Black Friday, the biggest shopping day of the year, will be a 100% digital event for once.<!– –>

If you’re used to hitting the shops on the last Friday of November to score the best Black Friday deals, brace yourself for the 2020 edition. Because of the corona pandemic, Black Friday will take place completely online this year.

Extended edition

As the name implies, Black Friday in the United States traditionally falls on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Over the years, this period of discounts has gotten longer and longer: from Black Week, the entire week before the Friday in question, to Cyber Monday, the following Monday, which is entirely devoted to online promotions. And in corona times, the 2020 edition is even more extensive. Amazon, for example, started throwing discounts in October.<!– –>

Many brands shower you with tempting promotions before and after 27 November. And Cyber Monday (Monday, November 30) could also be an unseen hit given the current circumstances.

There are clearly two trends: either identical promotions over a long period of time, or an accumulation of one-off offers during the week (or even month), at low prices but for a limited time.

Lockdown Promotions

High-tech products still predominate during Black Friday, but other product categories could also offer interesting discounts this year. Just think of items that are popular during the lockdown: accessories for working from home, clothes for relaxing and cocooning, interior decoration, bicycles, fitness equipment, do-it-yourself tools …

Supermarkets are not lagging behind

While some supermarket departments are closed to avoid unfair competition with small retailers, all products remain available for delivery or through Click & Collect. And of course the supermarkets also participate in Black Friday with multimedia, electronics, toys … Carrefour, Colruyt and Cora have already announced a lot of promotions.

Patience!

If you thought Black Friday will be a lot quieter online than in stores, then you are wrong. This year the web shops will see ‘black’ of the people. For some online stores you will therefore have to queue up to get in. And the most popular products may sell out very quickly this year. Also keep in mind that delivery times are likely to be longer, even though most companies have taken measures (such as hiring additional temporary staff).

Many online retailers expect a stampede on November 27th and have therefore announced their deals earlier than other years. In short, whether you are going shopping for Black Friday or the end of year celebrations, in 2020 the following applies: the earlier, the better!

But look on the bright side: in a few clicks compare prices between different brands, read the feedback from other online buyers, promo codes galore … You have to have serious blinders on not to find your favorite product at the best price. Online Black Friday does not only have disadvantages!
