And it was a trifle, because the Book Institute, due to the pandemic and the cancellation of international book fairs, organized foreign promotion of Polish books aimed at foreign publishers and translators. One of the elements of the campaign is a three-minute spot, which freely, using artistic concepts, shows the advertised items – Jacek Dukaj, and this is Wacław Holewiński, Dominika Słowik, Bronisław Wildstein and also Szczepan Twardoch. Maybe Rusinek did not read Twardoch and did not know that the title of the novel refers to the hero’s name, maybe, as an eminent literary connoisseur, he does not know that literature does not need, and sometimes should not, be translated literally. What are the nuances, it’s important to hit “PiS institutions”. It is only a paradox that the artistic elite of our homeland are fighting against this minister Gliński for politicizing culture, and this in a situation where the deputy prime minister is distributing money generously both to the left and to the right – to all artists regardless of their political views.
But okay, the authors get over it, they published their notes on the Internet, then deleted them, they torn their wonderfully arranged hair over the regime at expensive hairdressers, this is not some particularly momentous incident. Surprisingly, however, is their ubiquitous pretentiousness that they can twist a whip out of anything and aim it at state institutions, because it is color, music, because the hem of the skirt. It is very similar to the portrait of another writer, Ivan Turgenev, created by Fyodor Dostoyevsky in “The Devils”. Turgenev, a good but unremarkable writer, appears there under the name of Karmazinov, and his every gesture, every reaction from the environment, gaze, handshake and comment are to be calculated on the effect of recognition and adoration for the writer.

Everything is so pretentious, so narcissistic that the embarrassment scale goes faster than the Chernobyl dosimeter.

Don’t bother me, ‘he said charmingly, and when he was convinced for good that I would not pick up the filter for him, he picked it up by himself, but as if he had warned me. He nodded once more to me and walked on, detonating me completely. It was as if I had actually lifted it. In a matter of minutes, I thought I was desecrated forever.
One may only wonder if the writers, who are really outstanding, follow every promotional mention of them, every smallest advertisement, spocik from every side, or whether the world treats them with dignity. There was a promotion, the Polish state gave money, nothing but nodding, shrugging shoulders, and yes – the director of the film Grzegorz Jankowski is embarrassed, the Book Institute, which issued a special statement, is embarrassed, even Michał Rusinek, who wanted to shine but did not work out . And it’s all because of the promotion in the multimedia spot.
Anyway, like Karmazinov, he is cosmopolitan, elegant, over the heads of mortals, who defies critics with various epithets, maybe, like Karmazinov, that is Turgenev, to finish. Today in demand in bookstores, he will be overshadowed in the future by novelists like the Dostoyevsky who place him in some secondary scenes of his works as a studied narcissist.
Anyway, the spot is worth seeing with your own eyes, has there really been a rape of literary geniuses?
