Black Friday plays the cards of hackers

They pointed out that the discount promotion is literally like a magnet for various internet fraudsters. And the same in pale blue applies to the Cyber Monday event, which falls on the last Monday in November.

Coronavirus measures are bringing an increase in online sales. The shopping season is approaching, so we can expect a record activity of cybercriminals. Therefore, be careful and carefully consider and check all special discounts around Black Friday and Cyber Monday, “warned Pavel Krejčí, security researcher at Check Point.

He stressed that phishing campaigns are becoming more sophisticated, so sometimes it can be difficult to detect fraud. “Every email and every offer needs to be handled with care. It’s not all the gold that glitters, “said Krejčí.

The Check Point analysis shows that the number of phishing emails has increased more than 13 times in the last six weeks. “Every 826th e-mail received is a phishing message, and at the beginning of October, only one in 11,000 e-mails were phishing scams,” said a security expert.

“In the first half of November, the number of phishing emails with ‘special offers’ increased by 80 percent compared to October. Cybercriminals focus on discounts around Black Friday and Cyber Monday and are abusing well-known brands, such as Pandora, “added Krejčí.

Beware of suspicious offers

Therefore, people should be very careful, especially with too advantageous offers. “For example, an 80 percent discount on a new iPhone usually doesn’t bode well,” the security expert concluded.

“Fake campaigns and phishing attacks do not escape the Czech Republic either. Banks and transport companies feel it the most, but Czech e-shops are also a great motivator for attackers. The main reason is the fact that shoppers in a particular e-shop are very likely to shop again soon. The attacker is therefore more likely to make a mistake. Human curiosity is one of the most unpopular hacking tactics, “said Michal Lukáš, Kaspersky’s manager for the Central and Eastern European region.

Fraudsters have such sophisticated methods that they can smuggle a malicious virus into an infected machine, steal user data, and in some cases even deprive a trusting person of money.

In addition to e-mails, people can also come across fraudulent offers related to Black Friday and Cyber Monday on social networks, but also on various questionable servers, where they appear as advertisements.
