Birds are the best models, according to Aldis Dobenbergs, a painter and art pedagogue who once graduated from the Sports Pedagogy Academy and achieved good results in javelin throwing, until the lure of art won.
“At the time when I was painting the entire cosmos of the planet and I was interested in astronomy, a crow flew into my garden one meter away, sat on a blooming apple branch and looked at me. I was instantly attracted by the graphic side, plasticity and drama, very grateful to painting,” the artist recalls.
Igors Dobičins, the curator of the exhibition and chairman of the Artists’ Union of Latvia, explains: “Perhaps he is given signs that he indirectly notices and depicts, but he must be able to read those signs. I don’t want to say that he is a seer or seer, but as a medium, he gives society these concerns, fear, anxiety [zīmes]reflects its signs through his vision.”
The exhibition “Crows. Modern auspices” can be viewed at the Latvian Artists’ Union gallery until the end of July.
