Billionaire Tomáš Plachy’s Safichem Group Sells Pacovské strojírny to Charvát Group, Ending Era of Equipment Manufacturing in Pacov

Billionaire Tomáš Plachy’s Safichem Group has sold Pacovské strojírny, a company that manufactures, for example, equipment for microbreweries, chemical production or dairies in Pacov in the Pelhřimov Region. The new owner is the Charvát Group, a major manufacturer of hydraulic systems and aircraft landing gear, owned by businessman Jiří Charvát.

“The company no longer fit into the long-term strategy of the Safichem group, which is focused on renewable resources, real estate management and development, the pharmaceutical industry and engineering in the field of water treatment, energy, chemical and petrochemical industries,” Tomáš Plachý Jr., who he manages the Safich holding with his father Tomáš Plachy.

“We bought Pacov strojirny because we could not find any suitable investment in our classic activities. So we had to look elsewhere. We are looking for qualified human labor that cannot be replaced by automation or robotics,” said Jiří Charvát, head of the Charvát Group.

Neither party disclosed the price of the transaction. “The price was commensurate with the turnover and operating profit in 2023. Pacovské strojírny achieved a turnover of just under 300 million crowns with an EBITDA profit (profit before interest, taxes and depreciation – editor’s note) of 20 million. The negotiations took place quickly and very correctly. The price was also appropriate for the fact that both the seller and the buyer are older people with extensive business experience who understand that property is primarily a responsibility,” described Jiří Charvát.

The tradition of production in Pacov dates back to the 19th century. The impetus at that time was the boom in distilleries in the Highlands, related to the widespread cultivation of potatoes there. The next wave of boom in production in Pacov started in the 1950s. Tomáš Plachy’s holding company took over the engineering company in 2013.

In the market for equipment for breweries, Pacovské strojírny also faces other competition. Among them are, for example, the Brno company Destila and Cheops from Chotěboř.

Charvát Group employed around 880 workers last year, the group’s sales were 2.4 billion crowns. The group is based in Zbraslavice in Kutnohorsk, but also has production plants in Semile and Opava. The company also has several foreign branches, including, for example, Germany and Ukraine.
