Bill Seeks to Give $500 Tax Credit to Blood Donors – NBC Bay Area

A new bill that was introduced in the California Legislature proposes giving a $500 tax credit to certain blood donors, as part of a strategy to encourage these donations.

The project AB-1709, proposed by legislator Freddy Rodríguez, indicates that the tax benefit would be for those who make at least four donations of blood or human blood components.

Donations are due to certain Health and Safety Code Division 2 entities, such as blood banks and hospitals, as established in the bill.

The proposal seeks to address the shortage of blood and blood components that are needed for vital medical procedures and can help save lives.

If the bill is approved and signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, the payments would be made as of January 1, 2023.

“It is alarming that California has reached a crisis level in its blood supply, a position that no one in an emergency should have to face,” said Assemblyman Rodriguez in a press release.

“The solution is simple: those who can donate blood, should. The impact of donating blood right now is immense, and Californians can do something positive for our health care workers and those who are sick or injured. I urge everyone to eligible Californians to sign up for a donation today,” he added.
