“Bill Orcutt and Guitar Quartet Perform ‘Music for Four Guitars’ Live at Roulette Intermedium in Brooklyn”

The multidisciplinary venue in Brooklyn, New York, USA, Roulette Intermedium has just shared on its YouTube channel, the complete performance that Bill Orcutt and his guitar quartet performed on March 27, 2023, playing their album “Music for Four Guitars” from last year.

Joined by his Bill Orcutt Guitar Quartet, made up of guitarists Wendy Eisenberg (The Flying Luttenbachers), Ava Mendoza (Nels Cline, William Parker) and Shane Parish (Ahleuchatists), the group presented the music in an expanded live format that combines composition with improvisation.

According to Roulette Intermedium, Bill Orcutt is the former guitarist and founder of the 1990s band Harry Pussy, and his sound “is a stuttering reinvention of the blues guitar, weaving looping melody lines and angular attack into a dense, sweeping landscape. American primitivism, outsider jazz and a style stripped back and re-imagining the possibilities of the guitar”.

The text adds that “whether he’s playing his decrepit acoustic guitar or his beat-up electric Telecaster (both stripped of two strings, as has been his custom since 1985), Orcutt’s jagged sound is completely unique and instantly recognizable, in the same frequency as avant-garde composers and rural blues musicians”.
