Every year, tech billionaire Bill Gates makes a list of book nominations – just like Barack Obama does with songs. However, the selection of the co-founder of Microsoft wanted to innovate this year and escape the pattern.
The 2023 book list by Bill Gates I didn’t just bring books. “For the past decade, I have recommended great literary works to read each summer. This year, I decided to mix it up and try something different,” he explained.
Therefore, the billionaire selected only two books: one of fiction and one of non-fiction. To complete the list, he indicated a Netflix series and a playlist with some of his favorite songs, ranging from Billie Holiday to Adele.

Book: “Tomorrow, tomorrow and tomorrow” (Gabrielle Zevin)
The book tells the story of two friends who, united by the Super Mario games, grew up together. Upon arriving at university, they started making their own games.
According to Gates, the story touched him because it reminded him of his friendship with Paul Allen, the other co-creator of Microsoft.
Book: “Born in Darkness” (Howard French)
This book-report, written by journalist Howard French, of African descent, tells the story of the continent in more depth than is usually seen.
“In reality, he explains, several African kingdoms established city-states that rivaled those of Europe in terms of political organization, military power, trade, art and exploration. It’s a compliment when I say that ‘Born Into Darkness’ left me wanting to know more,” he says.
Series: “Borgen” (Netflix)
Now the list starts to get diverse. Bill Gates nominated the Netflix series “Borgen”. This is a Danish political drama that follows the country’s prime minister in a fictional setting.
