Bijan Robinson stresses importance of Texas QBs Quinn Ewers, Hudson Card to step up

ARLINGTON, Texas – This offseason has been memorable for Texas football, especially after the losing 2021 season in Steve Sarkisianis his first year of work. The Longhorns went from being the butt of jokes in late November to signing one of the best recruiting classes in the nation in 2022, which included the addition of the former No. 1 general prospect Quinn ewers out of the transfer portal.

But even with the success of the offseason, Texas still has a major question to answer on offense, at a position Sarkisian considers the “most important in sports” — quarterback.

The Longhorns enter the season again with a very inexperienced, though arguably more talented, QB room and ongoing competition for the starting job as Texas prepares to kick off fall camp.

“I think we have exactly what we need at quarterback,” the junior running back Bijan Robinson said when asked if Texas has enough at QB to compete in 2022.

“I know that (Carte Hudson et Quinn ewers) are competing right now, but they’re still competing because they’re both really talented guys. I’m next to them every day and I see the improvement they both make.

“With Hudson – it’s his third year and he’s had that college football experience from last year – it’s really good to see him become that leader and become more constructive with offense now that he knows the attack and all attack.

“Then with Quinn he was a great addition to this team. I know he’s young, but he’s learning at a fast pace. He’s starting to master the attack and he’s just comfortable there, so I like what both guys are doing and I like the talent we have.

While Card is the most experienced of the group (with his two college starts), a lot of hype has followed Ewers since his move to Texas with many outsiders already naming him as a starter for the upcoming season.

Being a former five-star prospect with a lot of hype himself, Robinson made it his business to help encourage Ewers to drown out the outside noise and stay focused on the playbook so he could play the game. height of his ability, knowing the importance of getting the right QB position and the impact it Have you got on the overall offence.

“When your quarterback is on your offense, then everyone on offense is where they need to be,” Robinson continued.

“(Ewers) is always trying to get his feet wet in college football. He’s played a few snaps but it’s different from playing a game so he still has to earn everyone’s respect and come here and just have a chip on his shoulder.

Sarkisian will continue to assess the QB battle when the Longhorns start fall camp in early August, although the second-year head coach thinks he’ll likely name a starter sooner than he did in 2021 due to recent rule changes which allowed the coaching staffs to work more with the team during the summer months.

“The beauty of summer is that we’ve been around these guys all summer and we’ve been able to be on the court with them to develop their skills, to see some of the growth that they could do from the spring ball in the summer,” Sarkisian said. during the media days of the 12 big ones.

“No, we haven’t made a decision yet, but I don’t think it will take as long as maybe last fall.”
