Bielsa evaluates calling Suárez and Cavani for the Copa América

Montevideo. The coach of the Uruguayan soccer team, Marcelo Bielsa, said on Monday that he had more certainties than doubts about the squad for the Copa América and did not rule out calling up Luis Suárez and Édinson Cavani, historic scorers for the Celeste.

“I have few doubts today,” Bielsa said at a press conference about the team that will compete in the top continental national team tournament, which will be played in the United States from June 20 to July 14.

“I think that each position requires two players and I always try to have three instead of two and that the difference between the three is not very big,” he explained, and noted that this objective “is somehow covered.”

The Argentine coach, who has directed the Celeste since last May, said that he wants “the best in each position”, although he acknowledged that “sometimes the best are not necessarily those who have the most qualities, but rather those who, at the time of the decision, they are in good shape.

He also referred to the “great difficulty” of choosing footballers at the end of the club season “because competing after having played 60 games in the year is not the same as competing with preparation time, with rest.”

Bielsa considered it “premature” to name names, but insisted that Suárez and Cavani, La Celeste’s historic scorers, both 37 years old, “are eligible for the Uruguayan team.”

“The opposite would be for me to say that I’m not going to call up those two players. I never said that and I’m never going to say it. I watch all the games, I evaluate and make decisions,” he stated and stressed: “There is no Suárez game.” and Cavani that I haven’t seen.”

Cavani (Boca Juniors, ARG) was never called up in the Bielsa era, unlike Suárez (Inter Miami, USA), who was called up for the November matches of the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
