The Biedronka chain informed that it is accelerating the withdrawal from the sale of cage eggs. Warsaw will be the region where changes will be implemented the fastest. This will take place from January 2021. Previously, similar declarations were made by other networks.

According to information provided by representatives of Biedronka, the process of withdrawing cage eggs from the offer is to be completed by the end of 2021, i.e. 4 years earlier than the originally declared date.

This means that from January 1, 2022, the network will only sell eggs marked as 2, 1 or 0, and will withdraw those with the symbol 3.

The quickest changes, from January 1 next year, will be introduced in Warsaw. “Over 150 Biedronka stores in Warsaw, operated by the distribution center in Parzniew, will offer customers fresh eggs only from alternative farming” – reads the release.

As indicated, the decision applies to both fresh eggs sold under Biedronka’s own brands and producers’ brands, which occasionally appear in chain stores as a supplement to the assortment.

Other networks
Late last year Aldi has committed to withdrawing cage eggs from its offer. The products are expected to disappear from store shelves by the end of 2025.

Lidl has also decided to completely abandon the use of “threes” eggs. By 2025, the company has committed to completely abandon the collection of cage eggs and deliver them to stores around the world.

Auchan, Tesco, Kaufland, Carrefour and Netto also informed about the complete abandonment of the use of “threes” eggs.
