The drone attack was in response to a suicide bombing that killed at least 169 Afghans and 13 US soldiers on Thursday at one of the gates of Kabul airport. The Pentagon said today that the drone had killed two “planners” Daesh and injured another member of the terrorist group. It is not clear whether these people were directly involved in Thursday’s assassination.

“The situation on the ground remains extremely dangerous and the threat of a terrorist attack on the airport remains high,” the US president added. “Our commanders have informed me that the attack is very likely to come within the next 24 to 36 hours. I have ordered them to take all possible measures to protect our troops.” added.
The US Department of Defense announced today that it has begun withdrawing US troops from Kabul Airport. Washington has previously announced that the military will withdraw from there by August 31. The presence of the US military at the airport is crucial in terms of the ending evacuation of foreigners and Afghans fleeing the radical Islamist movement Taliban, which seized virtually all of Afghanistan in mid-August after a surprise and lightning offensive.
The Taliban condemned the US air strike in Nangarhar province because, according to him, it was “clear attack on Afghan territory”. However, the senior Taliban commander previously said that several members of Daesh had been detained in connection with the assassination and are now being interrogated by the Taliban’s secret service.
