Biden warns “US will not lift Iran sanctions first”

Urging Iran to stop enriching uranium immediately

-US President Joe Biden said on the 7th (local time) that the United States will not lift Iran’s sanctions first unless Iran stops enriching uranium.

President Biden appeared on CBS TV’Face the Nation’, which aired on the same day, and nailed him that he would not first lift Iran’s sanctions to put Iran at the negotiating table.

He expressed his willingness to take positive steps toward lifting sanctions only when Iran stops enriching uranium.

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, urged the U.S. to lift sanctions completely first if he wants Iran to fulfill its nuclear agreement obligations. Foreign Minister Muhammad Jabbad Zarif also said the day before that Biden’s administration showed signs that Iran would maintain sanctions. In the past, U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blincoln said that only if Iran fulfilled its promises, the Comprehensive Joint Action Plan (JCPOA), a nuclear agreement signed in 2015 with five permanent members of the UN Security Council and six major German countries. Iran resumed production of uranium enriched with 20% purity under the pretext of following the “sanction response strategy action plan” approved by its parliament last December last month.

US-Iran relations have worsened since former President Donald Trump declared a departure from the Iranian nuclear agreement in May 2018 and re-issued sanctions against Iran.

In response, Iran has gradually withdrawn and reduced its promises under the JCPOA since May 2019.
