Biden Urges Senate to Pass $1.25 Trillion Proposal as Parties Clash

A proposal for a decision on these matters was presented on Sunday. The total amount corresponds to around NOK 1,250 billion.

– I am asking the Senate to come together and quickly pass this cross-party agreement, and to get it to my desk so that I can sign it into law immediately, says President Joe Biden.

The proposal comes after several months of negotiations. In both parties, however, there are both supporters and opponents of the proposal, according to the Reuters news agency.

The house promises noise

According to Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, the proposal must be voted on by Wednesday at the latest. Whether the necessary 60 votes are achieved is still unclear.

Republican Mike Johnson, the leader of the House of Representatives, says the package will be “dead on arrival” if it gets there.

– This proposal is even worse than we feared, and it will not come close to stopping the border disaster that the president has created, he writes X.

Wide package

The package includes just over $20 billion for monitoring the border with Mexico, as well as just over $60 billion for Ukraine support and just over $14 billion for Israel, according to a source in the Senate.

In addition, almost 2.5 billion dollars will go to the US military’s Central Command and the conflict in the Red Sea and close to 5 billion dollars to support the US’s partner countries in the escalating situation with China.

On top of this comes $10 billion in humanitarian aid to civilians in the Gaza Strip, the occupied West Bank and Ukraine.

Ukraine stop

There are thus hints of an end to several months of political drama. If no agreement is reached, there will be a complete halt in US arms support to Ukraine – support that will be difficult for Ukraine’s other allies to replace.

However, many Republicans have been very skeptical of continuing funding for Ukraine’s defense war.

In particular, Biden’s likely opponent in the presidential election, Donald Trump, has been skeptical of letting the Democrats win the tug-of-war over money for border surveillance, Israel and Ukraine. Many Republicans want a halt in Ukraine support, as well as a much stricter border policy. For their part, many Democrats believe that the proposal for migration policy is far too strict, and skepticism about supporting Israel is also growing rapidly in the party.
