Biden promises reconciliation of the USA in his victory speech

The newly elected US President Joe Biden promised in his victory speech to work for a reconciliation of the country. The US Democrat described his election victory on Saturday evening (local time) in front of cheering supporters in his hometown of Wilmington as “clear” and “convincing”. “I promise to be a president who doesn’t want to divide, but to unite.” Biden distinguished himself from incumbent Donald Trump without naming him.

The former Vice President called for a new political togetherness. It is time to “heal” the country, the “era of demonization” must end. “We have to stop treating our opponents like enemies. They are not enemies. They are Americans.” For him there are no democratic or republican states, but only the “United States”, stressed Biden.

He ran for the office of president in order to “restore the soul of America, to rebuild the backbone of this nation – the middle class – and to ensure that America is once again respected around the world.”

The 77-year-old appealed to Trump’s voters to give him a chance as president. “I understand your disappointment. I’ve lost a couple of times myself, but let’s give each other a chance now,” said Biden at the victory ceremony in Wilmington.

Due to the corona pandemic, only around 360 trailers were allowed to attend the drive-in party, who, in contrast to Trump’s supporters, wore protective masks in a disciplined manner despite the festive mood. Thousands more people cheering and dancing lined the streets on the way to the event.

His future deputy, Kamala Harris, spoke to Biden. She thanked the US voters for heralding “a new day for America”. Harris becomes the first woman to serve as US Vice President and the first black woman. She will not remain the only woman in this position, she said: “Every little girl who watches tonight sees that this is a land of opportunity.”

Biden, who was proclaimed the winner of Tuesday’s presidential election on Saturday morning, announced the formation of a group of experts in the fight against the corona pandemic on Monday. This should draft a plan that could be implemented immediately after taking office on January 20. The president will then be sworn in as the 46th president in US history.

The US broadcasters last reported Biden’s victory on Saturday in the key state of Pennsylvania with its 20 voters – and thus the overall election victory.

However, incumbent Trump did not recognize his opponent’s victory. “The fact is: the election is far from over,” said Trump. Biden is “wrongly” portraying himself as the winner and is supported by his “media allies”.

Trump announced that his lawyers would appeal the individual election results to all courts from Monday. The President speaks without any evidence of massive electoral fraud with which the Democrats wanted to “steal” his election. The chances of success of the lawsuits are however low.

Congratulations for Biden came from Germany, France, Great Britain and Canada only a short time after the announcement of the election victory. From Russia, which interfered in the 2016 election in favor of Trump according to the US secret services, there was initially no reaction.
