Double bitter disappointment for Doll

The German biathlon team also remained without the hoped-for medal in the third World Cup race. Benedikt Doll has also taken out a mortgage for the upcoming race.

At the finish, Benedikt Doll leaned on his ski poles with his head hanging down. Two errors in the prone position early on destroyed the 33-year-old’s hopes of a medal in the 10 km sprint, which the Norwegians once again dominated.

“It was pretty good, the two mistakes weren’t necessary. Running wasn’t ideal either. A small flaw everywhere,” said Doll, the best biathlete in the German Ski Association (DSV), after a disappointing 13th place. The German team was left empty-handed after the third race at the World Championships in Nove Mesto.

Sturla Holm Lägreid took the title and crowned a Norwegian triple victory ahead of Johannes Thingnes Bö and Vetle Sjaastad Christiansen. Doll, who has already won two World Cup sprints this winter, made two shooting errors and was 1:41.2 minutes behind Lägreid. Looking at the pursuer on Sunday (5:05 p.m./ARD and Eurosport) over 12.5 km, this is a big challenge, even third place is already 1:22.6 minutes away.

Biathlon World Cup: Doll fighting despite setback

Doll still appeared combative: “Now I’ll make sure I attack in pursuit. I’m definitely keen to move forward.”

Johannes Kühn (1/+1:41.9), Philipp Nawrath (1/1:44.3) and Philipp Horn (2/2:11.5) were also unable to place 14th, 16th and 25th in the sprint staged as hoped. Nawrath also had great hope after a win this season.

“With one mistake,” he said on ARD, “I expected more going forward. But I couldn’t move very well. It’s a shame that nothing progressed. I conceded quite a bit on the track.” Kühn added that he had “no explanation for this running deficit.” ARD expert Arnd Peiffer was also at a loss: “The German men had no access from the start.”

Another World Cup without a German men’s medal?

The men’s team continued its negative streak. Peiffer won the last medal so far in 2021 (silver in the individual). The last World Cup triumph to date was five years ago, Peiffer won in Östersund in 2019. The men did not win a medal at the last two major events – despite the World Cup season, which was partly excellent, this danger is also present now,

At the start of the World Cup in Nove Mesto, the DSV team took fifth place in the mixed relay. In the women’s sprint on Friday, Franziska Preuß was the best German biathlete in sixth place. The pursuit races continue on Sunday with the women’s 10 km (2.30 p.m. LIVETICKER) and the men’s 12.5 km (5.05 p.m. LIVETICKER) pursuit races.
