BG Göttingen needs a win for self-confidence against bottom Frankfurt

A series of defeats will break when the BG Göttingen and the Fraport Skyliners face each other in a catch-up game of the 17th match day in the Sparkassen-Arena on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. The violets have recently left the field as losers four times, and Frankfurt have gone empty-handed three times in a row.

Both teams desperately need a win. While the Hessians, who come to southern Lower Saxony as bottom of the table, are concerned with sporting survival, the Göttingen could underpin their playoff ambitions with a win and quickly forget the clear defeat in Braunschweig. Points on the credit side would be much more important for self-confidence after this series of defeats. The BG will face a team from the lower half of the table for the seventh time in a row. Four of the previous games were lost, there were only victories against Bayreuth and Frankfurt.

The Skyliners recently had to admit defeat to the Bamberg team, who had regained their strength and were moving towards the playoff ranks, with 72:75 and showed fighting qualities in the second half, which they won 35:25. The Frankfurters have had a new head coach on the sidelines for four matches. When the situation at the Fraport Skyliners became more and more threatening, the Hessians did what many clubs do in critical situations: they fired their head coach Diego Ocampo. The measure initially had a positive effect. In the first game after the dismissal, in which the previous assistant coach Klaus Perwas was responsible, the Frankfurt team won the away game at the Basketball Löwen Braunschweig. This was followed by a narrow 61:58 defeat against ratiopharm ulm – the newly appointed head coach Luca Dalmonte had just completed two training sessions with the team.

The Skyliners still have eight games to work their way up to a non-relegation zone. However, the saving bank is a bit far away, because teams like s.Oliver Würzburg and EWE Baskets Oldenburg have recently shown again and again that they are doing everything in their power – successfully – to resist relegation. The first team on a non-relegation place is the Syntainics MBC, but they already have a lead of three wins and, with two wins, also won the direct comparison.

The Italian Dalmonte should take the big savior role in the end of the season. He is trying to “change a few processes, but not too much at once. It has to be done step by step,” said Marco Völler, Sport Manager, about the first sessions in an interview. The 58-year-old appears to Völler “very relaxed, matter-of-fact and calm. Bringing in restlessness or hectic pace would also be wrong in our situation.”

The first meeting with Frankfurt this season was won by the Goettingen team on March 9th with 73:65, after the hosts had been in the lead for a long time. The violets only managed to turn the game around in the final quarter.

Head coach Roel Moors and his players have eight games left in the main round. They still have home rights four times – including against the two teams threatened with relegation from Frankfurt and Giessen (May 1). The Hamburg Towers (April 10) and Alba Berlin on Easter Sunday are also coming to the Sparkassen-Arena. The fact that BG Gottingen beat three of those four teams in their first meeting of the season should help to approach the task with confidence.

The four away games lead the violets to Bamberg (April 13), to table leaders Bonn (April 24), to FC Bayern Munich (April 29) and to Crailsheim. However, this catch-up game has not yet been scheduled.
