Bewildered by huge swimming party Wuhan: city picks up normal life

The images made of the party show how everyone is lying close to each other in the water and dancing happily to the music. There is no question of a distance of 1.5 meters and no one wears a mouth mask.

The owner of the swimming park really only wanted to sell half the tickets, but in the end the swimming park was filled with 15,000 people. For female tourists, the tickets were even offered for half the price, in order to have as many people as possible at the party.

Images go viral

Meanwhile, the festive images from Wuhan have already been viewed more than eight million times and are widely discussed. The first corona infections were detected in the Chinese city at the end of 2019. The virus then spread rapidly across the rest of the world.

But where we in the Netherlands are still dealing with measures to contain the virus, they seem to have returned to normal life in Wuhan.

On the one hand, this leads to surprised reactions. Many people wonder why we should put on masks here, reserve them for the terrace and keep a distance of five feet, while that is no longer the case in Wuhan.

On the other hand, there are also concerned reactions. After all: Wuhan was the cradle of the virus. People are worried about a new spread of the virus and a possible second wave, but it is precisely in the Chinese city that hardly any infections have been detected for a long time.

Strictest lockdown in the world?

After the virus surfaced in the city at the end of last year, Wuhan was completely locked in January. In a city of eleven million people, one person per household was allowed to be outside for a maximum of two hours a day. With that, Wuhan turned into a ghost town.

The lockdown was gradually relaxed from March. Shops reopened, people were allowed out without restriction and even the notorious animal markets, where the virus may have spread from animals to humans, have reopened. Compared to that period, you see fewer and fewer people wearing a mouth mask.

What could be a reason for that? According to the Chinese authorities, no domestic contamination has been detected in Wuhan since mid-May. That makes it possible that the city that had perhaps the strictest lockdown in the world is now slowly returning to normal life. There is also no longer a ban on these kinds of mass gatherings.

Fears of the virus seem to be diminishing rapidly among the residents of Wuhan. The last time infections were found among residents, in early May, millions of residents were tested for the virus within two weeks. If that happens again in Wuhan, large-scale testing can start again.
