#BetterTogether: CBS New York and Community Food Bank of New Jersey partner for 2nd annual turkey drive

NEW YORK — We are #BetterTogether during this season of giving and CBS New York teamed up with the Community Food Bank of New Jersey for our 2nd annual turkey drive to fight food insecurity on Saturday.

All morning, CBS New York anchors and reporters were out collecting donations at three locations in New Jersey.

Dana Tyler, Otis Livingston, John Elliott, Vanessa Murdock, Kristine Johnson and Chris Wragge among the many CBS New York family spread out across three locations — the ShopRite in Livingston, Acme Markets in Jersey City and the Smartworld Coffee on Diamond Spring Road in Denville.

CBS New York partnered with the Community Food Bank of New Jersey collecting donations to ensure every family has a happy Thanksgiving.

The Lee family, who owns Peerless Beverage Company, says the holiday season is all about giving back.

“We’ve been working with the food bank for over 25 years now, and it’s just important for us to be able to give back to community during this special time of year to make sure that everybody obviously has a great Thanksgiving,” Ed Lee said.

“March, April, May, July — food insecurity has no particular month. It’s all the time,” Tyler said.

#BetterTogether: Fighting food insecurity is a year-round effort

That’s so true, according to the CEO of CFBNJ, Elizabeth McCarthy.

“Every dollar donated to the Community Food Bank of New Jersey can provide three meals to a New Jerseyan in need, so your money really goes a long way,” she said. “It’s a year-round problem. People don’t always realize, New Jersey, they think of it as a wealthy state. There’s three-quarters of a million people in New Jersey who are food insecure.”

“And how’s it going so far?” Wragge asked.

“It’s going great. People are incredibly generous, and it’s just so nice to see,” McCarthy said.
