Bern: The Brasserie Lorraine is threatened with an end

There’s no money: Brasserie Lorraine in Bern will soon have to increase its prices for the second time. And a fundraiser is currently underway.

  • The Brasserie Lorraine wants to collect 100,000 francs in donations. This is intended to repay a loan.

  • Since the Covid pandemic, sales have declined. The brass is also feeling the effects of price increases.

  • If things continue as they are, the restaurant could be open for a few more months at most.

A lot is coming together at Brasserie Lorraine at the moment: since the Covid pandemic, income has fallen and expenses have increased due to inflation. At the same time, the Bernese restaurant has to repay a loan.

There are 100,000 francs missing from the cash register. At least. As the “Brass” writes on its website, additional debts were added to the loan of this amount: “Last winter we weren’t even able to pay the rent for a few months,” it says.

Brasserie Lorraine: “Every visit is valuable”

The collective that runs the Brasserie Lorraine wants to repay these 100,000 francs as quickly as possible and has to do so a fundraiser started. The brass operators also encourage people to visit the restaurant. “Every visit is valuable,” it says on the website.

“If we continue to generate sales like we are currently doing, we can only be open for a few more months at most,” says collective member Valentina zur «Berner Zeitung». At the same time, a working group was founded to rehabilitate the ailing finances.

The prices had to be increased once, and there will soon be a second increase. Such considerations about sales are “very absurd” for the collective, as Valentina goes on to say, because they are critical of capitalism.

The current donation level is around 10,000 francs.

No long-term effect on guest numbers

The Brasserie Lorraine is considered a cult restaurant in Bern. It became known to the general Swiss public in the summer of 2022 when the concert of the reggae band Lauwarm was canceled because of band members’ rastas.

In October 2023, the collective received a penalty order. The accusation was of racial discrimination. The collective objected to this. The uproar surrounding the cancellation of the concert had no long-term effect on the number of guests.

What also caused a stir was the fact that a group of army personnel in uniform were thrown out of the pub.
