Berlin-Schmargendorf: World War II Bomb Defusing Preparations Underway, Thousands Evacuated

Since Tuesday morning, preparations have been made to defuse a World War II bomb in Berlin-Schmargendorf. Thousands of people have to leave the exclusion zone around the site where the bomb was found, and 330 police officers are on duty.

In Berlin-Schmargendorf, preparations are underway to defuse a World War II bomb. “The evacuation of the restricted area is in full swing,” the police announced on Platform X on Wednesday morning. 330 police personnel are deployed so that defusing can begin quickly. Thousands of residents in the area around Mecklenburgische Straße in the Schmargendorf district of Berlin in the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district had to leave their homes on Wednesday morning.

The unexploded bomb, weighing around 250 kilograms, was found on Tuesday morning during construction work on Mecklenburgische Straße.

Daycare centers also have to be evacuated

According to the police, around 7,500 people are affected by the evacuation measures. They were all supposed to have left their homes by 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning at the latest.
According to the police, three daycare centers and 30 apartment blocks are also affected by the evacuation.

Those affected will be provided with emergency accommodation during defuse. These are open from 10 a.m., as the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district office announced.
