Steven Berghuis does not rule out that he will stay with Feyenoord longer. The Eredivisie top scorer, in conversation with Algemeen Dagblad, states that ‘the feeling has changed’ since the entrance of trainer Dick Advocaat and technical director Frank Arnesen.
Berghuis extended his contract in the summer of 2019 and thus seemed to pre-order a transfer in 2020: however, that scenario is somewhat less likely after the coronavirus outbreak. In addition, Berghuis likes to work with Lawyer, who has made him captain. “The ambition to show it abroad again is not gone. But the feeling has changed,” he told the AD. “Especially if you compare it with the last season under Giovanni van Bronckhorst and the first months under Jaap Stam.”
Wearing the captain’s armband in particular has great significance for the left leg. “Being a captain now was a real stimulus that I needed. I thought that at the beginning of the season.” Stam, however, gave confidence to Eric Botteghin, who succeeded Robin van Persie. “At the time I thought I could be second captain behind Robin, but Van Bronckhorst didn’t want that. He then chose Jordy Clasie.”
Berghuis recently had an interview with Advocaat and Arnesen and also felt good about it. “They do send the right signals,” said 28-year-old Apeldoorner. “Those two are just not easily satisfied. I really like that. If they send that signal within the club and everyone has to participate, we will rise and rise.” Berghuis establishes that Feyenoord is going in the right direction. “We are working on something. Lawyer and Arnesen really want to put something here. They radiate that to the group and that is an important atmosphere for a top club. A top sports atmosphere. I missed that and that is back at Feyenoord.”
