Conings was on the anti-terrorist list because at the time of his escape he was armed and considered very dangerous. The man’s body was found by some people walking in the woods near the town of Dilsen-Stockem, along the northeastern border that divides Belgium from the Netherlands.

His car was found without a license plate in those areas. The manhunt, which lasted more than a month, had taken about 350 men of the Police Forces in military order.
The virologist Marc Van Ranst, who had been threatened by Conings, commented on the news on Twitter: “My thoughts go out to Jurgen Conings’ family and baby. For them this is particularly sad news, because they have lost a father, a family member and a friend.” The professor had been in a safe house for more than a month.
