The coronavirus pandemic has shut down several sectors in Morocco. As a result, Belgians are deprived of peeled shrimp which they love.

The food sector has also taken a hit with the cessation of activities by fishermen at sea. According to the director of the Flemish fish market, Tom Premereur, quoted by the Flemish press, shrimps caught in the North Sea are sent in Morocco to be shelled there in specialized units whose activity is now slowed down or shutdown due to the health crisis linked to Covid-19.

Unsurprisingly, there is a shortage of peeled shrimp in supermarkets, he said. This crustacean with exotic accents, an ingredient of Belgian cuisine is served in salads, croquettes or to accompany seafood platters.

As a reminder, shrimp is consumed up to 95% per household in the flat country.
