Belgian Ministry of Asylum and Migration Refuses to Pay Fines Leading to Seizure of Coffee Machine and Freezer

A bailiff has seized a coffee machine and a freezer from the Belgian Ministry for Asylum and Migration. The reason is the refusal of State Secretary Nicole de Moor to pay penalty payments for not receiving asylum seekers.

Belgium is trying to limit the influx of asylum seekers by discouraging asylum seekers from coming to Belgium. That is why male asylum seekers without families are not accommodated, but put on a waiting list. Until then they are homeless. No place has been arranged for almost 3,000 asylum seekers.

This policy is against the law: according to Belgian media, the government and the reception service Fedawil have already been convicted at least 9,000 times and numerous penalty payments have already been imposed, of 250 euros per asylum seeker per day.

De Moor refuses to pay these penalty payments because, according to her, it will not provide sufficient shelter places. It costs more than it yields, is her defense. “We are colliding with the limits of our system here and that is why the system itself must be reformed,” she said last year. Penalty payments of tens of millions of euros are now outstanding.

De Moor confirms against the VRT that a coffee machine and a chest freezer were taken this morning. They are auctioned publicly.

Yesterday, the State Secretary presented her new code for migration rules in Belgium:
