Behind the Scenes of StarDance: Costumes, Emotions, and Technology

All evenings are broadcast live from the Křižík Pavilion at the Holešovice Exhibition Center in Prague. That’s where StarDance takes place. The dance couples have been training since the end of July in rehearsal rooms on Kavče hory. The contestants only saw the broadcast location for the first time this week.

“It doesn’t look as spectacular to me as I thought it would. But it’s a fact that we haven’t seen the whole light design, music, clothes yet. But it looks a bit like in the living room,” actress Ivana Chýlková described her feelings.

“Great, I haven’t been here in ten years. I didn’t think it would happen to me again, I’m really looking forward to going down those stairs, I really like it, it’s really nice,” said her dance partner Jan Tománek.

The performers had to rehearse everything honestly on the first evening of the competition. “Of course, it adds a little nervousness to the fact that we get instructions on where things are and where we should go. I think to myself, I can’t remember that, and add dancing to it,” kayaker Vavřinec Hradilek said with a laugh. “I’m a little nervous because I’m not nervous yet,” noted dancer Kateřina Bartuněk Hrstková.

“I’m embarrassed because I’m still wandering here. Now I was in catering and I didn’t hit back. I have a problem with orientation and it’s hot here,” actor David Prachař admitted. Viewers can find all ten couples, details about the competition and other interesting things at website of Czech Television.

So far, the costumes for the first two parts have been sewn

Since the first year, over fifteen hundred women’s costumes, more than twelve hundred men’s, have been sewn. There are most of them in the warehouse on the Kavče hory. This year, some of the previous series will be used and recycled for the first time, slightly modified. There will be about ten of them. So far, the costumes for the first two parts have been sewn, then they will be finished depending on who will advance in the competition.

The most important place for the show to get on the screens is the transmission car, where the director sits during the broadcast. “I’m sorry that I’m outside the emotions of the dancing couples, but on the other hand, there are emotions here too,” smiled director Jan Fronc.

Backstage there is a make-up shop and a massage parlor

The parquet is roughly the size of a volleyball court. “There is a similarly large building behind the scenes, where there are dressing rooms, costume rooms, and make-up rooms. We also have a massage parlor here, because sometimes it happens that there is a health problem, so we have physiotherapists,” explained executive producer Vojtěch Svoboda.

One hundred and sixty people participate in the live broadcast. Sixteen cameras shoot in the evening. “There is so much technology here that if someone somewhere kicks out a bag, it’s a problem,” remarked the director.
