In an interview with Sports ClubBayern Munich coach Chus Mateo has explained his position regarding the dismissals of his colleagues.
Three coaches have been fired since the start of the Euroleague season: TJ Parker at Villeurbanne, Dusko Ivanovic at Red Star Belgrade – he has since returned to the position at Vitoria – and Joan Peñarroya at Vitoria. Without forgetting Sergio Scariolo who arrived from Bologna before the start of the competition. Pablo Laso experienced a slightly different situation at Real Madrid since it was following a heart attack that the Spanish club replaced him with Chus Mateo in June 2022.
« It is very simple. When I started coaching many years ago, they told me: « Are you ready to be fired? And they fired me. So it’s part of the job and you have to understand it. Does that mean I like it, that I agree? No. This is often the smallest link in the chain. You’re not going to fire 10 players, you’re going to fire the coach. Maybe the next coach that comes in won’t do better, but it seems like if you make a change everything will be fine. I wish it was that simple. I do not think so. It’s definitely not like that. I’m a guy who believes a lot in the work that coaches are doing all over Europe. »
He adds :
« Fire the coaches? You must understand it. It’s like that, but often, It’s not the dismissal of coaches that will change the dynamic. We’ll probably have to live or die with this. In the case of Dusko (Vitoria) it’s simple: he can always go to Vitoria “, joked Pablo Laso in reference to the fact that the Montenegrin joined Baskonia for the fourth time in his career.
