Bayern Munich insisted on playing the traditional Bundesliga opening game on Friday, when the German League offered to postpone their match from the first day to benefit from three more days of rest after the Champions League final .
“The outgoing champion will open the new season, as has been the case since 2002,” said the League (DFL) in a statement.
“Despite reaching the final of the UEFA Champions League, the reigning champions Bayern Munich have expressed their wish to open the season according to tradition”.
Bayern, who will face Paris SG in the Champions League final on Sunday, will therefore face Schalke in the opening match of the Bundesliga on Friday 18 September.
The DFL had initially proposed to play Dortmund, the vice-champion, in the opening match against Mönchengladbach and to postpone the meeting of Bayern to Monday.
