The Bavarian state government is pressing ahead with dealing with the breakdown in the corona tests of holiday returnees. Tens of thousands of results still have to be transmitted to those affected, including positive ones.

That Prime Minister Markus Söder holds on to his health minister Melanie Huml (both CSU), meets with criticism from the opposition.

“The fact that no one takes personal consequences after a scandal of this magnitude is a sign of poverty and has lasting damage to our political culture. Huml is no longer sustainable after the test disaster as health minister, “said FDP country chief Daniel Föst.

The Vice President of the Bavarian State Parliament, Markus Rinderspacher (SPD), tweeted on Thursday evening: “Now an administrative officer is taking on political responsibility for a striking misconduct that originated in the state government’s carelessness. That is a culture of responsibility à la CSU“.

Söder expressed his regret about the glitch with corona tests

Söder admitted the breakdown on Thursday and regretted the error, which should now be fixed as soon as possible. He expressed his confidence in Huml, who had twice offered to resign. Andreas Zapf, however, was replaced as head of the State Office for Health and Food Safety and transferred to the ministry.

As expected, the Junge Union Bayern received praise: “It shows character to admit mistakes and then iron them out,” tweeted the CSU youth organization. “Bavaria has the right strategy.”

44,000 return travelers are waiting for the test result – including corona positives

On Wednesday, Huml had stated that 44,000 return travelers still have no result of their corona tests most of which were made at the stations set up at the end of July at rest stops near the border.

Background for the delays is therefore above all that the comparison of laboratory tests and forms is carried out manually. In addition, the demand was greater than expected.

Hundreds of positive results were not yet submitted. As of Thursday afternoon, the Minister of Health had spoken of 908 identified victims who had been contacted since the morning. In addition, there are also positive results that could not yet be assigned. There may be duplicates among them – that must be checked. Bayerischer Rundfunk even reported 1,389 positive test results out of a total of 107,376 tests for travelers returning.

The questions where the infected are currently living and how many are already informed are still completely unclear. Also on Thursday nobody could say where the sick were on vacation and where exactly they were infected.

The number of people infected with corona in Germany continues to rise

The number of confirmed new infections with the corona virus continues to rise. According to the Robert Koch Institute, the health authorities in Germany reported (IRC) 1,449 new corona infections within one day by Thursday evening. The value was last higher on May 1st with 1,639 new infections registered.

Since the beginning of the corona crisis, at least 221,413 people have stayed in Germany demonstrably with SARS-CoV-2 infected (data status August 14, 00:00). 14 new deaths have been reported since the previous day.

According to the RKI, the number of deaths in connection with a corona infection is now 9,225. According to RKI estimates, 200,200 people had survived the infection by Friday morning.

The previous high point in the number of new infections reported daily was at more than 6,000 at the beginning of April. The number had tended to fall after the values still exceeded 1,000 in May, and has been rising again since the end of July. Experts are concerned that there could be a sharp increase in the number of cases, which will push the health authorities to the limit when tracking chains of infection.

Reproduction number is 0.91

The reproduction number, or R value for short, according to RKI estimates with data as of August 13th, 00:00, in Germany was 0.91. This means that one infected person infects slightly less than another person on average. The R-value depicts the infection rate about one and a half weeks beforehand.

In addition, the RKI gives a so-called seven-day R. It refers to a longer period of time and is therefore less subject to daily fluctuations. According to RKI estimates, this value as of August 13th, 00:00, was 1.06. It shows the infection process from 8 to 16 days ago.

According to RKI information, the R values have been 1 or slightly above again since mid-July 2020. “This is related to a larger number of small outbreaks, but also to the nationwide case numbers, which have risen steadily since the relaxation of the measures as well as increasing cases among immigrants in recent weeks,” it said.
