Basketball: Seawolves assistant coach Christian Held: Grew up in the gym

Even as a little boy, Christian Held stood under the big baskets in the sports hall with his basketball. When he was “five or six years old” he tried to throw the ball through the trap for the first time, recalls today’s assistant coach of the Rostock Seawolves. Back then in Trier, where his father Ralph Held, among other things, brought him to basketball.

“I grew up in the sports hall and played actively through all youth teams in Trier and later in Oldenburg,” says the 32-year-old. But he quickly realized that he would not make it into professional basketball as a player. “I wasn’t talented enough,” admits Held. Nevertheless, he made it into paid sport, as a coach. After finishing school, the native of Aachen was team manager at EWE Baskets Oldenburg for a year. At that time, father Ralph was assistant coach for the Bundesliga basketball team. In the 2008/09 season, the two even celebrated the German championship with Oldenburg. “Then I decided I wanted to become a coach myself,” says Held, who then completed a three-year training course.

After further positions in Oldenburg and Trier, where he was the head coach of a team from the 2nd basketball league ProA for the first time, he signed on this summer as Dirk Bauermann’s assistant coach at the Rostock Seawolves.

The father of two has settled in very well so far. He praises the flair of the Hanseatic city: “We like to be at the port or the beach. These are great places, especially in summer. The kids are also enthusiastic about Karls Erlebnishof. “

However, Christian Held did not yet have too much time for activities outside of basketball. “I’m very meticulous and someone who likes to work a lot,” he explains. At the second division, the Rostock Seawolves, he has been assistant coach for a good two months. Four wins from five games and second place are the previous results of the Seawolves, which were newly formed with nine newcomers. “The start was positive. We are approaching the way we want to perform. We can build on that. But there is still a lot of work ahead of us, ”says Christian Held.

The 32-year-old has already coached two games this season as “boss” on the sidelines. In the win against the Artland Dragons, Held had to step in after a few minutes because of a field reference for Bauermann. Last Sunday in the record victory (109 points) over Ehingen, Bauermann left his “co” responsible, as he will not be available for the upcoming game on Saturday in Paderborn due to the international trip with the Tunisian national team. Nothing unusual for Held, as he was already the head coach in Trier. “This is a great vote of confidence from Dirk, which has arisen from the daily work we have done together over the past few weeks,” says Held. Bauermann also praised the collaboration: “In terms of method and content, no sheet of paper fits between us. Christian knows exactly what we want and works extremely well. “

Christian Held wants to reach the playoffs with the Seawolves this season. But before that there are still many tasks to be done. Next Saturday (7:30 p.m.) the sea wolves are challenged at the Paderborn Baskets. “A very strong team that has enormous offensively”, Held assesses the next opponent.
