As a teenager, Dirk Nowitzki was a promising tennis player himself

Dirk Nowitzki will be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame tomorrow, Saturday, the provisional end of a career that cannot be overestimated. Born in Würzburg, who only played for the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA, he is one of the all-time greats of international basketball. And as a teenager he also hit the tennis ball quite well. Nowitzki showed that he still knows how to hold the racket in Melbourne earlier this year when he hit a few balls with Alexander Zverev.

In the current week, Nowitzki has once again commented on tennis, as the WTA website reports. “I watch a lot of tennis, I love tennis,” Nowitzki is quoted as saying. “I grew up as a tennis player and have followed the sport my whole life. Of course I’m a huge Roger Federer guy, but I’m also a Nadal fan. It’s really difficult to pick a favourite.

Nowitzki raves about Alcaraz

At the moment, Nowitzki is particularly fond of Carlos Alcaraz. “I only saw him in Indian Wells a few months ago. Incredible. The feeling, the talent, his physique, the speed, the athleticism. For me he has the whole package. And the crazy thing is that he’s only 20 years old. If he stays injury free then obviously he will dominate the sport for a very long time.”

“I saw the full Wimbledon final against Djokovic a few weeks ago,” Nowitzki continued. “It was a great match. How tough this boy is mentally at this age, that he did it against Djoko was unbelievable. He is the next generation.”
