Barricades of Beisfjord in Narvik in anticipation of the storm – NRK Nordland

It is a long list NVE and the Norwegian Meteorological Institute have sent out.

Take for example Steigen in Nord-Salten. No less than eight danger warnings have been issued here.

Among other things, strong gusts of wind, a lot of rain and high risk of avalanches.

– We are sure of what kind of weather it will be, but the weekend is uncertain in many other ways, says Tommy Skårholen at the avalanche warning to NVE.

– There will be a lot of weather. Lots of wind, rain and mild weather. We expect that there will be naturally triggered large landslides, and perhaps also some very large landslides.

No one should say that they have not been warned in Steigen in Nordland.

Closes landslide-prone road

In Narvik, they have already begun preparations.

The very landslide-prone county road 751 to Beisfjord will be closed from midnight on Saturday. The road will not reopen until Sunday at 12.00 at the earliest.

This means that the approximately 700 inhabitants neither get in nor out in a day and a half.

– There has been an avalanche there today. The geologists have assessed that due to the weather that has been reported, the road has to be closed, says assistant emergency manager Rolf Lossius in Narvik municipality to NRK.

He also says that the municipality has asked the police to evacuate those who live within the barrier.

The police inform NRK that it is not currently relevant, but that they are following the situation closely.

Lossius says that Narvik municipality has increased its preparedness before the weekend.

And they may be cheating.

– Special weather situation

According to meteorologists, 80-100 millimeters of precipitation can occur within 24 hours.

The forecast applies to Salten, Ofoten, Vesterålen and Sør-Troms.

That is a little less than what was announced on Thursday. Then the meteorologist said that it could be extreme weather. They have gone away from that now.

– It is still a challenging weather situation, says on-duty meteorologist Ola Bakke Aashamar at Vervarslinga in northern Norway.

He can also state that it will blow hard. Up to full storm in some places and gusts up to 35 meters per second.

– The wind is strongest in the Vestfjord, but it is also where they have the most experience with this wind direction.

And then we’m talking about winds from the southwest.

Bakke Aashamar says that it is an unusual weather situation we are facing.

– Vi have had similar and worse rainfall events, but then it is often in the fall. This is especially with regard to the season – it is still winter in northern Norway.
