Barendrechts Dagblad | A vaccine only in 2021: ‘Still very tough autumn’

Now that a vaccine does not appear to be available in 2020, the Netherlands is facing a “very tough autumn”, experts fear. That writes the AD.

Where it was first hoped that the Netherlands would have the corona vaccine from AstraZeneca at the end of this year, that no longer seems feasible. Last week, Minister Hugo de Jonge of Public Health suddenly mentioned a vaccine “in the first months of 2021” during the cabinet press conference.

According to experts, it makes no sense to hope for a vaccine in 2020. “It was very optimistic to expect that from the start, and it shows”, says doctor-microbiologist Marc Bonten of UMC Utrecht.

Immunologist Ger Rijkers of University College Roosevelt in Middelburg also calls it “not realistic”. Rijkers expects that we will have a “very tough autumn” without a vaccine. “Now the weather is fantastic and we drink beer on the terrace. Soon we will do that indoors. If we don’t follow the rules, it can really get out of hand.”
