Barcelona is selling the title to its legendary Camp Nou stadium. All proceeds will go to fight the pandemic.
“We are faced with a global crisis that has no precedent in our modern history. Therefore, we must courageously and calmly take responsibility. We consider it vital to use all our resources to combat the coronavirus pandemic and its consequences. (…) For the first time, someone will be able to rename Camp Nou, but the proceeds will go to all of humanity, not just Barça, ”said Jordan Cardoner, vice president of the Catalan club, who had recently had COVID-19 and had recovered.
How the money will be used will be determined by the club’s fund and the sponsor: each side will make its own proposals for the distribution of half of the funds. Barcelona has already stated that it wants to offer to use part of the money in Spain, especially in Catalonia, and in those countries where the club has existing charitable foundations. Cardoner said the planned projects include helping older people, especially in nursing homes.
Camp Nou is the largest stadium in Europe with a capacity of almost 100 thousand spectators. He has never had a sponsor since opening in 1957.
Renaming rights will be valid throughout the entire 2020-2021 season. Barcelona hopes to strike a deal in the coming weeks. Due to a pandemic in the budget of the club, which is also experiencing internal disagreements, a hole has already formed, forcing players to reduce their salaries. Nevertheless, the proceeds will not be used to close it.
