For a few years, Barcelona has suffered shocks that have placed it in a difficult position from the privilege of being one of the most attractive and admired cities. Barcelona now faces a post-pandemic period for the 2021-2022 biennium. That is where the impulse that has characterized it in many moments of its history to build must now surface to rebuild. This impulse requires the complicity of the public and the private and this time taking advantage of many of the potential that the city already offers. Among others, those treasured by our research centers stand out, hubs technological, hospitals, entrepreneurs, professionals and scientists, etc., in a world shaken by biology that has science as the only answer. In that world, all those city agents, here by the sea, reveal themselves as heroes of reconstruction and of a future city with perspective and global impact.
Now more than ever, we must accompany those leaders of science and innovation activism with supportive measures. Society has understood that investment in science, health and technology is a priority to save lives and ensure economic and social sustainability. Knowing that we have the strengths, we must now contribute financial, human and social resources. Just at the moment of the necessary impulse, Barcelona cannot afford not to have a project, not to have a future that differentiates it from other cities in the world: science and technology with social impact. Barcelona cannot allow its great innate attractions linked to innovative entrepreneurship to be diluted in the inertia typical of a devastating 2020 in many ways.
We must support social and economic progress hand in hand with the promotion of investment in science, health and technology
We must, and social leaders in the first place, political and non-political, bet on a city in which creativity and initiative navigate well in an ocean of science, health and technology. We just have to continue promoting all this despite the general sentiment, under the confidence that this city has suffered, resisted and reborn from other pandemics, sieges and wars, as for today not to stop supporting what makes us more solid in the long term : the social and economic progress of the hand of the impulse of the investment in science, health and technology. This tandem of investment and progress results in a better life for the city and its citizens.
Thus, it is only possible to applaud and encourage other public and private institutions to develop or intensify projects such as the ones I give here as a recent example: the support of the Barcelona City Council from the Jaume Collboni council to investment funds in the field of technology and the innovation announced a few weeks ago; the ongoing initiative and now defined by Barcelona & Partners from Barcelona Global to attract foreign investment in key sectors for the city and its future; or the repeated commitment of Banc Sabadell in the field of health and technology as an investor. They are samples of some good projects, public and private, that should only grow and make a city grow awake, supportive and creative, but wounded.
