Banksy plant in London auctioned for EUR 2.4 million

A work by the British artist Banksy on the refugee crisis was auctioned off on Tuesday for 2.4 million euros, exceeding all estimates. Sotheby’s auction house announced the sale of the work in the evening in London, entitled “Mediterranean Sea View 2017”.

Banksy had previously announced that it would donate the proceeds to a Palestinian hospital in Bethlehem. The value of the work had previously been estimated at 883,000 to 1.3 million euros. The work consists of three oil paintings. They show a wild sea and a coast full of orange life jackets and lifebuoys. The work relates to the people who lost their lives in the sea during the refugee crisis of the past decade, Sotheby’s explained on his website.

The triptych hung until recently in the lobby of the Walled Off hotel in Bethlehem in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, which was co-founded by Banksy. The proceeds from the sale of the plant should go to a clinic in the city. They are to be used to finance the establishment of a ward for stroke patients and rehabilitation equipment for children.

Banksy has become world famous as a graffiti artist, but his identity is known to only a handful of confidants. His works often have political messages. The “Walled-Off Hotel” is located in the immediate vicinity of the Israeli barrier wall and advertised the “worst view in the world” when it was inaugurated three years ago, because the view from the rooms looks directly onto a piece of concrete wall that separates Bethlehem from Israel .
