Banco del Bienestar Faces Challenges in Branch Expansion as Promised

MEXICO CITY, August 2 (EL UNIVERSAL).- After EL UNIVERSAL published this July 31 that Banco del Bienestar has failed to comply with the number of branches, Elizabeth García Vilchis, reader of the morning section “who is who in the lies of the week”, he accused “disqualifications of the government”, and when trying to clarify his information, he stumbled upon his data.

In the conference of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador this Wednesday at the National Palace, García Vilchis assured that as of July the Banco del Bienestar already has 2,124 operational branches in the 32 entities of the country.

“The goal is to have 1,700 new branches and these are under construction,” said the reader of “the lies of the week,” but the Government of Mexico announced the opening of 2,700 branches.

“We finish, although it gives courage to the opposition and the conservative media: Banco del Bienestar is the institution with the most branches nationwide, above Banco Azteca and BBVA,” he added.

EL UNIVERSAL revealed that the Banco del Bienestar, formerly Banco del Ahorro Nacional y Servicios Financieros (Bansefi), was one of its flagship projects at the beginning of the administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador; However, five years after its creation was announced, the federal government has not completed the branches it promised and has a 97% delay in the legal acquisition of the land required to build them.

Said banking institution has signed numerous agreements for more than 15 billion pesos, but it has not been able to conclude even half of the proposed branches and its lag is 31%.

Currently, the goal is the construction of 2,700 branches throughout the country; however, only 1,873 are in operation according to the latest directory published on the bank’s official website, that is, 69% of the target.
