Baltic Language Crisis: Pskov University Researchers Push for Russian Language Revival Through Online Courses and Contests

The researchers of the Pskov University are concerned about the fact that fewer and fewer people in the Baltics speak Russian. This needs to be changed: lure people into online courses and contests. The best students can be offered positions in Russia, international organizations and even the United Nations.

Online courses already exist, but in the textbooks published in Russia, behind the language teaching is indoctrination.

“Sometimes there are poems that promote certain Russian symbols, the Russian state apparatus, and everyday Russian life, the regime, saying that it is the most correct, the most democratic, the most open, the best. In a book published in Russia, which has a story about grammar or culture, may come across some very surprising information.

There are cases when we have contacted a specific embassy, there are cases when we have cooperated with law enforcement authorities both for the purpose of evaluating information and for the purpose of limiting the availability of information in Latvia.”

Russian analysts emphasize that it is necessary to work more actively with Russian language teachers in Latvia. They should be supplied with the correct Russian language learning materials. One such resource already exists – a portal for training in the Russian language, or “Pushkin Institute”.

There is a representative office of the “Pushkin Institute” in Tallinn. It has not tried to start work in Latvia, but Moscow and St. Petersburg universities have tried to register their branches several times. Representatives of Pskov University were also active in Latvia.

Russian analysts place an even greater emphasis on spreading the correct version of history. “Today’s digital space is a battlefield where the preservation of historical memory becomes a weapon,” the report said.
