Not only in Gundelfingen, but also in other municipalities in the region, fewer regional trains stop at times. Sprint-strong trains should be the solution – but too few have been delivered.
The new regional transport timetable, which has been in effect since Sunday, caused trouble especially in Gundelfingen. There are fewer regional trains in the municipality, especially in the morning. No regional train should stop there between 7.35 a.m. and 9.52 a.m. However, trains of the Breisgau S-Bahn continue to run. Gundelfingen’s mayor Raphael Walz complained to the Ministry of Transport about the regional trains.
From Stuttgart it is said that the deterioration should only apply until October. Because the delivery of new vehicles is delayed, replacement vehicles would have to be used temporarily on the Rhine Valley Railway, which runs through Gundelfingen. These are slower than the new vehicles, “for scheduling reasons” therefore some stops have to be omitted at times.
Gundelfingen is not the only municipality with fewer regional trains. Auggen, Norsingen and Buggingen are also affected in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district, but there are significantly fewer stops here.
Sprinters are needed in regional traffic
According to the ministry, it is not about saving time or deliberately accelerating a line through breakdowns. The replacement concept affects the regional railway (RB), which “should stop everywhere because of its traffic task”. In the Rhine Valley, however, the peculiarity is that it is a so-called “overloaded railroad”, on which fast long-distance and freight trains “press” on slower local transport, as the ministry puts it.
For this reason, vehicles with strong sprints have been procured for the RB, which manage to arrive at the node stations such as Freiburg in good time before the long-distance and freight traffic moves in, despite serving all stops. Only not all of these sprinters have just been delivered. And the vehicles of the replacement concept do not have this property. You would therefore have to skip individual stops in order to get through to Freiburg without overhaul and still reach the connections there.
