Bad News from WHO, Monkey Smallpox Starts Attacking Children!

Jakarta

Monkeypox continues to increase in several countries. Previously, experts investigating the outbreak said cases had occurred in adults, with the majority detected in men.

Quoted from The Sun, Friday (1/7/2022), the World Health Organization (WHO) is currently investigating reports of monkeypox infection in two children in England as well as children in France and Spain.

“I am concerned about this continued transmission as the virus has progressed and shown itself to be able to transfer to high-risk groups,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on the WHO’s official website.

“Right now we are starting to see some children are already infected (monkeypox),” continued Tedros.

The United Kingdom National Health Service (NHS) warns parents to be aware of some of the early symptoms of monkeypox, below:

  • High temperature
  • Headache
  • Muscle ache
  • Back pain
  • Swollen glands
  • Shivering
  • Fatigue

Dr Susan Hopkins, chief medical advisor at UKHSA, explains that the disease is “relatively mild,” in adults, with young children considered more at risk. Early symptoms are usually “non-specific,” says Dr. Hopkins, and are like “any other viral illness,”.

“It starts as red spots and moves to vesicles, it’s a blister-type lesion that looks like chickenpox,” he said. He said a rash usually appears on the face, hands and arms, but it can spread to the genital area.

According to WHO data as of Thursday (30/6), there have been more than 3,400 cases of monkeypox with one death since the outbreak was detected in early May. Most cases occur in Europe and are found in men who have sex with others.
